History and Formation of Enron Enron was formed through the merger of Houston Natural Gas (HNG) of Houston, Texas and InterNorth of Omaha, Nebraska. HNG covered the Florida and California market, their pipelines running from east to west. InterNorth catered the Iowa and Minnesota market, their pipelines running from north to south. HNG was formed in 1920, providing gas to retail customers in Houston. The company sold its retail gas business in 1920 and ventured into the gas exploration and production business. In the year 1984, HNG had $3.7 billion in assets, over $2 billion in sales and booked profits of $123 million. In 1984, InterNorth had revenues of $7.5 billion. The reason behind the merger was that InterNorth faced the threat of a buyout by corporate raiders as it had low debt and high revenues. The conservative operations and low debt of InterNorth made it a target for corporate raiders who planned to use its cash reserves and borrowing capacity to extract funds for themselves. On the other hand, HNG had borrowed heavily to expand its pipelines in the Florida and California markets. Therefore, merging with Houston Natural Gas made perfect sense as it fended off corporate raiders. Physical properties were compared to known standards for identification. Naturally occurring in animals as fats and in plants, esters are what give the flavor and fragrance of many fruits and flowers. They also make up a form of textile known as polyester. Esters are commonly used as solvents, added to foods and candies as artificial flavorings and included in perfumes and soaps as artificial scents. Essential oils are distilled from the leaves, flowers, stems, roots or other parts of a plant. They are highly concentrated and contain the pure essence of the plant. Essential oils are used most often in aromatherapy. They can be used as an inhalation treatment, as well as applied to the body. They can also be used as fresheners or as a natural pest repellant. Additionally, hydrosols, which are the aromatic waters that remain as a byproduct from producing essential oils by way of steam distillation, are also used commercially. 5 Esters are organic compounds formed from a reaction between an organic acid and an alcohol. Esters are synthesized through esterification. The process, also known as Fisher esterification, is a substitution reaction that uses an acid catalyst to produce an ester. Esters are isolated and purified by way of steam distillation. The steam vaporizes the volatile compounds of a natural product, which when condensed produces a liquid that can be collected and the ester purified. Further isolation is done by separation extraction. Steam distillation is an optimal way to separate volatile compounds from nonvolatile contaminants in high yield and is used extensively in the isolation of natural products. 3 Figure 1 shows the set-up of a steam distillation apparatus. 4 Figure 1 Esters can be identified based on structure and bond formations, in addition to physical properties. Spectroscopy is used to determine what ester has been produced. Infrared spectroscopy (IR) is used to detect vibrational energies of functional groups of atoms present. IR spectra show each functional group vibrates at different wavelengths and frequencies of light. A database of IR spectra from a vast collection of compounds is used for comparisons when trying to identify an ester. The spectra will show characteristic peaks for specific bond types present. Another form of spectroscopy is known as nuclear magnetic resonance, NMR. It can determine the location of atoms such as carbon and hydrogen within a molecule using strong magnetic fields. The nuclei of some atoms act as a small magnet and can be aligned when in the presence of a stronger magnet. Radio waves are then presented to a sample in order to cause the nuclei to flip direction. Different atoms require unique wavelengths in order to be flipped. The peaks of these wavelengths can be analyzed to determine chemical shift, giving atom numbers and functional group information. Carbon NMR gives the number of unique carbons as a single peak on a spectrum, while functional groups appear based on what is attached. Electron density is the main factor when determining chemical shift. Atoms with fewer electrons appear downfield, such as carbon attached to a high electronegative atom. As more electrons shield the atom from the effects of the magnetic field, decreasing the energy required to flip the nuclei, the peak appears upfield. A reference point using TMS is always given. Hydrogen NMR, also called proton NMR, gives the number of unique hydrogens present. It also gives functional group information, in addition to giving the relative number of hydrogens using integration and the number of hydrogens on adjacent carbons. Peaks can appear split on a spectrum. This is due to the magnetic influence they have on nearby atoms. This splitting occurs only when there are hydrogens located on the adjacent carbon, but not when hydrogen is attached to other atoms. Peak splitting has specific names for the number of peaks present. One peak in a singlet, two peaks is a doublet, three peaks is a triplet, four peaks is a quartet and peaks with five or more splits is known as a multiplet with the number of peaks present given as part of the name. 2D NMR, known as COSY and HMQC GC-MS The following experiment was conducted to synthesize an ester through esterification, separate and purify the ester through distillation and identify the ester through spectroscopy to determine chemical structure and according to physical properties. This is an important step when attempting to synthesize esters for commercial use. Natural product extraction requires purity whether the sample is being used merely for testing purposes or if intended for public use. Separation of the product helps in maintaining its purity and presents the greatest likelihood of proper identification. Highly accurate testing through IR, NMR, GS-MS with a pure sample will determine the correct structure based on comparisons with known compounds and issue definitive results. RESULTS and DISCUSSION Synthesis is the process of combining separate substances to make a complete compound through chemical reactions. Formation of esters using Fisher esterification occurs by refluxing carboxylic acid and an alcohol using an acid catalyst. Fisher esterification is a nucleophilic substitution reaction where the reaction mechanism occurs in several steps. First, a proton is transferred from the catalyst to the carbonyl oxygen. The nucleophilic oxygen of the alcohol attacks the carbonyl carbon. There is an additional proton transfer to a second molecule of the alcohol. Water leaves and deprotonation forms the ester. Armies Commanders: Americans Major General Nathanael Greene4,400 men British Lieutenant General Lord Charles Cornwallis1,900 men Battle of Guilford Court House - Background: In the wake of Lieutenant Colonel Banastre Tarletons defeat at the Battle of Cowpens in January 1781, Lieutenant General Lord Charles Cornwallis turned his attention to pursuing Major General Nathanael Greenes small army. Racing through North Carolina, Greene was able to escape over the swollen Dan River before the British could bring him to battle. Making camp, Greene was reinforced by fresh troops and militia from North Carolina, Virginia, and Maryland. Pausing at Hillsborough, Cornwallis attempted to forage for supplies with little success before moving on to the forks of Deep River.   He also endeavored to recruit Loyalist troops from the region. While there on March 14, Cornwallis was informed that General Richard Butler was moving to assault his troops. In actuality, Butler had led the reinforcements that had joined Greene. Moving forward, British troops began taking heavy fire from the North Carolina militia which was positioned behind a fence. The militia was supported by Lees men who had taken a position on their left flank. Taking casualties, the British officers urged their men forward, ultimately compelling the militia to break and flee into the nearby woods (Map). Battle of Guilford Court House - Cornwallis Bloodied: Advancing into the woods, the British quickly encountered the Virginia militia. On their right, a Hessian regiment pursued Lees men and Colonel William Campbells riflemen away from the main battle. In the woods, the Virginians offered stiff resistance and fighting often became hand-to-hand. After half and hour of bloody fighting which saw a number of disjointed British attacks, Cornwallis men were able to flank the Virginians and force them to retreat. Having fought two battles, the British emerged from the wood to find Greenes third line on high ground across an open field. Charging forward, British troops on the left, led by Lieutenant Colonel James Webster, received a disciplined volley from Greenes Continentals. Thrown back, with heavy casualties, including Webster, they regrouped for another attack. To the east of the road, British troops, led by Brigadier General Charles OHara, succeeded in breaking through the 2nd Maryland and turning Greenes left flank. To avert disaster, the 1st Maryland turned and counterattacked, while Lieutenant Colonel William Washingtons dragoons struck the British in the rear. In an effort to save his men, Cornwallis ordered his artillery to fire grapeshot into the melee. This desperate move killed as many of his own men as Americans, however it halted Greenes counterattack. Though the outcome was still in doubt, Greene was concerned about the gap in his lines. Judging it prudent to depart the field, he ordered a withdrawal up Reedy Creek Road towards Speedwell Ironworks on Troublesome Creek. Cornwallis attempted a pursuit, however his casualties were so high that it was quickly abandoned when Greenes Virginia Continentals offered resistance. Battle of Guilford Court House - Aftermath: The Battle of Guilford Court House cost Greene 79 killed and 185 wounded. For Cornwallis, the affair was much bloodier with losses numbering 93 dead and 413 wounded. These amounted to over a quarter of his force. While a tactical victory for the British, Guilford Court House cost the British losses they could ill-afford.   Though unhappy with the result of the engagement, Greene wrote to the Continental Congress and stated that the British have met with a defeat in a victory. Low on supplies and men, Cornwallis retired to Wilmington, NC to rest and refit. Shortly thereafter, he embarked on an invasion of Virginia. Freed from facing Cornwallis, Greene set about liberating much of South Carolina and Georgia from the British. This is so because religion will not have an impact on some individuals; they will be indifferent, having no particular interest or sympathy. While others may be observant, willing to learn but some will still be unmoved to come to faith or beliefs. These are just a few arguments as to why I feel psychology plays a pertinent role, because people that help make up all religions will have different reactions from their minds, thus leading to various behaviors and level of belief. Along with actions and reaction, the mind will also contemplate upon past experiences, this enables one to either come to faith or not at all, based on what someone had said or done to them.
